Features

Type RT Systems are a popular solution to the problem of furnishing constant water pressure in a building. Float switches in the roof tank actuate the house pumps in the basement and the water in the tank provides a reserve for peak demand periods plus fire standpipe requirements.
The building is assured of constant water pressure regardless of demand rate or fluctuating supply pressure. The tank water capacity between pump cut-in and cut-out allows the pump to remain off except during periods of high demand.

RT Systems utilize standard Federal pumps, either close-coupled end suction or horizontally split case double suction. The pumps can operate at 3450 RPM or 1750 RPM speeds.A high-and-low water level alarm float switch plus indicating lights, bell and silencer are furnished with the system.

DUPLEX SYSTEM: A duplex RT System includes two pumps, two on-off roof tank float switches to actuate the pumps, one high and low water roof tank float switch to actuate the alarm and one duplex control panel to include the following interwired internal components: (2) fused disconnect switches (or circuit breakers), (2) magnetic starters, (2) handoff- automatic switches, (1) automatic alternator to alternate the operating cycles of the pumps and provide simultaneous operation when required plus a high-and-Iow water alarm section.

TRIPLEX SYSTEM: A triplex RT System includes three pumps, three on-off roof tank switches to actuate the pumps, one high and low water roof tank float switch to actuate the alarm and one triplex control panel to include the following interwired internal components: (3) fused disconnect switches (or circuit breakers), (3) magnetic starters, (3) hand-off automatic switches, (1) manual transfer switch to permit changing of the pump operating sequence and provide simultaneous two-pump and three-pump operation when required plus a high and low water alarm section.

ACCESSORIES AND MODIFICATIONS:
A rubber-in-shear vibration rail set should be installed under each pump. A Fed-flex stainless steel hose connection plus a pressure gauge should be installed on each pump suction and discharge connection.
Electrode controls in the roof tank are available in lieu of the standard float switches, if preferred.
Federal Type SP Water Pressure Systems can be furnished for use in conjunction with Type RT Systems, if additional pressure boosting is required on the upper floors of a building.

FACTORY-ASSEMBLED SYSTEMS: Type RT Systems can be furnished factory assembled and pre-wired if jobsite assembly is not desired. Factory-assembled systems include a steel base, check valves, gate valves, pressure gauges and copper suction and discharge headers. The factory-assembled systems are available only with close-coupled pumps.

HORIZONTALLY SPLIT CASE PUMPS: RT House Pump Systems (unassembled) can be furnished with Federal horizontally split case double suction pumps (single-stage or two-stage). 3450 RPM and 1750 RPM pump selections can be found in Catalog Section 7 or the applicable pump performance curves in that section.

RT FACTORY ASSEMBLED SYSTEMS: RT House Pump Systems can be furnished fully factory assembled. lThis format is available only with close-coupled pumps. 3450 RPM pump selections are shown. 1750 RPM pump selections can be found in Catalog Section 5 or the applicable pump performance curves in that section.

CLOSE-COUPLED PUMPS: RT House Pump Systems (unassembled or factory assembled) can be furnished with Federal close-coupled end suction pumps. 3450 RPM pump selections are shown. 1750 RPM pump selections can be found in Catalog Section 5 or the applicable pump performance curves in that section.

Sizing The Pumps And The Roof Tank

PUMP CAPACITY
Pump capacity can be determined from the total number of fixtures to be served. The GPM rating shown in the table below apply to each pump of a duplex or triplex unit. If abnormal water-demand fixtures (such as swimming pools, laundries or process work) are present in the building, add extra capacity to the pumps.

PUMP HEAD (TDH)
The Total Dynamic Head of the pump includes the height from the pump to the top of the roof tank (static head), plus friction loss through the pump discharge pipe and fittings, minus the minimum available street pressure.

Example:
Static Head.......................................................................................................................120 ft.

Plus friction loss (can be estimated at 25% of static head)......................................................30 ft.
                                                                                                                                            150 ft.

Less street pressure available (varies by time of day and season of year; use minimum)............58 ft.

Pump head (TDH)...............................................................................................................92 ft.

ROOF TANK SIZE
Total roof tank capacity should be thirty times the GPM rating of the pump, plus required fire standpipe reserve.

Example:
Pump capacity (GPM)..........................................................................................................200
x30

Tank capacity (gallons).....................................................................................................6000

Plus fire standpipe reserve (gallons)...................................... ............................................3000

Total tank capacity (gallons) .............................................................................................9000

SUGGESTED SPECIFICATIONS - DUPLEX RT SYSTEM

Furnish and install, as shown on plans, a Federal Pump Corporation Duplex Type RT Roof Tank House Pump System. Pumps shall be rated as shown in the pump schedule.

Pumps shall be close-coupled, bronze-fitted, ball bearing, end suction, centrifugal type. Pumps shall have cast iron, back pull-out style casing with flanged suction and discharge connections, centerline discharge for automatic venting, enclosed bronze balanced impeller, bronze wearing ring, bronze shaft sleeve, mechanical shaft seal and copper by-pass line into the seal chamber.

If horizontally split case pumps are preferred to close-coupled pumps, delete the preceding paragraph and add the following paragraph in its place:

Pumps shall be horizontally split case, centrifugal, with cast iron casing the upper half of which shall be removable without disconnecting suction or discharge piping. Pumps shall have enclosed, bronze balanced impellers, bronze wearing rings, alloy steel shaft, bronze shaft sleeves, inboard and outboard ball bearings in moisture-proof housings, plus a mechanical shaft seal on each side of the impeller. Each pump shall be single-stage (or two-stage), connected to its motor by a horsepower-rated flexible coupling and mounted on a structural steel base.

Furnish and install in the roof tank, two 1-pole float switches for on-off control of the pumps and one 2-pole float switch for high-and-Iow water alarm actuation. Each switch with a weatherproof cast aluminum enclosure and mounting pedestal.

Furnish and install a duplex wall-mounting control panel in a NEMA-1 general purpose enclosure including therein two fused disconnect switches (specify circuit breakers in lieu of fused disconnect switches if motors are 20 HP or larger), two magnetic starters, two hand-off-automatic selector switches, an automatic alternator to alternate the cycles of operation of the two pumps and also provide simultaneous operation, if required, and a high-and-Iow water alarm section with 4" bell, indicating light for each alarm condition and a silencing button in the panel cover. All panel components shall be interwired and rated for the motor horsepower and voltage.

If a factory-assembled Roof Tank House Pump System is preferred to a system for jobsite assembly (available only with close-coupled pumps), add the following paragraph to the specification:

The two pumps and the control panel shall be factory-assembled on a single structural steel base. Factory pre-piping shall include a check valve for each pump discharge, an isolation valve for each pump suction and discharge connection and copper suction and discharge headers. A pressure gauge shall be fumished for each header. The control panel shall be mounted on the unit base and factory-wired to the motors.
