Features

RECEIVING TANK: Heavy steel construction, mounted on steel legs, and fitted with thermometer and gauge glass.

MAKEUP WATER VALVE: All-bronze float actuated valve, flange mounted in tank head, permits entry of makeup water when required, to replace system losses. Complete with strainer on make-up water connection.

PUMP(S): Close-coupled, bronze-fitted, centrifugal design, with leakless mechanical shaft seal.

MOTOR(S): Drip-proof ball bearing type close-coupled to pump(s). Single phase motors in fractional H.P. frame sizes have built-in thermal overload protection. Single phase motors in integral H.P. frame sizes, and all 3 phase motors, are furnished with magnetic starters in NEMA 1 general purpose wall-mounting enclosures. Units are available with 1750 R.P.M. or 3450 R.P.M. motors (see Engineering Selection Table).

UNITS: Unit is factory assembled on single steel base with pump suction piping complete. Simplex unit has one receiving tank, one makeup valve and one pump and motor. Duplex unit has one receiving tank, one makeup valve, and two pumps and motors. Triplex unit has one receiving tank, one makeup valve and three pumps and motors. Quadruplex unit has one receiving tank, one makeup valve and four pumps and motors.

OPERATION: Boiler feed pump(s) is controlled by a boiler water level controller mounted on the boiler. These controllers are usually furnished with integral low water cut-off and alarm switches. Boiler feed water is taken from the receiver, and if condensate has been lost in the system, it is automatically replaced by the makeup valve.

SIZING DATA

PUMP CAPACITY: Multiply the developed boiler H.P. by .07 to determine the evaporation rate of the boiler (expressed in gallons per minute). Next, multiply this evaporation rate by 3 to determine the capacity of the feed pump (in G.P.M). This factor of 3 allows the pump to cycle at reasonable intervals. If one boiler is being fed, a simplex unit may be used, but a duplex unit (with each pump sized to independently feed the boiler) has the advantage of providing an emergency standby pump or alternating the pumps for even wear. If two boilers are being fed, use duplex unit and size one pump for each boiler (specify 4-pole double throw transfer switch to cross pump-boiler assignment) or use triplex unit with each pump sized to feed one of the boilers (specify transfer switch to use one pump for standby service).
PUMP DISCHARGE PRESSURE:
Discharge pressures in the Engineering Selection Table are pressures at the pump. To compute, add boiler working pressure plus static head (from pump center line to boiler connection center line) plus discharge line friction loss (including pipe, fittings, valves, etc.). Convert all factors to P.S.I. before adding. Static head plus friction loss plus a small residual pressure can be estimated at 5 P.S.I. in most cases.
RECEIVER SIZE:
Allow approximately one gallon of receiver capacity for each H.P. of boiler(s) being served. (Example: If two (2) 250 H.P. boilers are being fed by a duplex unit, receiver should have 500 gallon capacity.

Furnish and install as shown on plans, a Federal Pump Corporation type BFC triplex boiler feed unit sized to provide feed water to two boilers. Each pump shall be sized as shown in the pump schedule.

The unit shall be factory assembled by the pump manufacturer, including the feed water receiver, pump and motor units, and accessories mounted on a steel base with pump suction piping complete. Pumps shall be close-coupled, end suction, bronze-fitted centrifugal type, with centerline discharge for automatic venting. Back pullout design shall permit removal of the motor and rotating assembly without disturbing piping.

Each pump shall have an enclosed balanced bronze impeller, mechanical shaft seal and copper by-pass from the pump discharge into the seal chamber. Pumps shall be close-coupled to standard NEMA JM-frame motors in open, drip-proof enclosures, rated as shown in the pump schedule. Furnish a magnetic starter for each motor with overload protection on each phase and a hand-off-automatic selector switch.

Pump no. 1 shall feed boiler no. 1 and pump no. 2 shall feed boiler no. 2. A manual transfer switch shall permit pump no. 3 to act as standby for either pump no. 1 or pump no. 2. Starters and transfer switch shall be factory mounted on the unit and wired to the motors. The pumps shall be controlled by a boiler level controller mounted on each boiler, as herein specified.

The feed water receiver shall be of heavy steel construction with convex heads, gauge glass, thermometer, and connections for return, vent and drain. A makeup water valve, flange mounted on the tank head, shall be all-bronze, float operated type with strainer. The receiver capacity shall be as shown in the pump schedule.
